The history of Knysna can be found deep in the Knysna forest at the Millwood Materolli museum where you will discover evidence of the 1876 gold rush. The renovated original mining equipment and the old Knysna high street is a ghostly reminder of a once vibrant mining community. Now the surrounding area provides scenic walks on the foot hills of the beautiful Outeniqua mountains ranging from 1.5 to 12km in length. The Materolli tea room is 15km from Fern Gully self-catering accommodation.

Knysna indigenous forest provides great hiking trails in the area include the 3km undulating Circles in the forest hiking trail which commences at the Dalene Matthee memorial. Ensure you following the signs otherwise you may find yourself completing the full 9km circular hike. Jubilee Creek hiking trail lies deep in the indigenous forest crossing picturesque streams flowing with clear mountain water and croaking frogs. The route is gentle and forgiving taking approximately one hour to complete.

The walk starts and finishes at the Millwood picnic spot covering a distance of 5.6 km which can be comfortably walked in 2 hours. Follow the yellow and black route markers with the crossed pick and spade emblem.The route takes the hiker through the original mining village, of which one building Materolli or Monks store remains of old Main Street. The route ascends into the pine plantation allowing the hiker breathtaking views of the Millwood nature reserve and the prominent Taitsberg peak to the north. The route again enters the plantation taking the hiker past Bendingo mines and the graveyard back to the starting point.

Forest horse rides are 1.5 hour duration on a cross country circular trip through the beautiful Homtini forest area traversing indigenous forest, rivers and plantations on private land.
